Two World Champions. An Olympic Champion. Three Welsh Internationals. An England Test Match Cricketer. A Premier League Champion. Now that's not a bad list of achievers. But when all those sportspeople come from one country, and one as small as Wales, then that list of achievements carries even more weight. The list is made up of a rugby player, two footballers, a cricketer, a boxer and a cyclist.
“Believing is achieving” is the book that tells their story. It learns of their formative years; it explores their early career; it exposes their disappointments - some of them career threatening; it records their ultimate success; it tells us about their families. But something sets this book apart, something about it is quite unique. The book is compiled and written by eleven year olds.
In January 2010, freelance sportswriter David Brayley, began a literacy project with Casllwchwr Primary School in Swansea, the school he has been a Governor of for the past eight years. His idea was to inspire children to embrace literature via his lifelong passion, sport. The result is “Believing is achieving.” 26 year six pupils spent hours researching and learning everything they could about the six sporting celebrities that would visit them over the early months of 2010. The result was nearly 200 questions that would probe the very heart of each of the sports stars, such was the maturity with which the children approached their task.
Following the detailed interviews with the stars, the children withdrew to their classroom and began constructing their written work for the book. What followed was an astounding 100 pieces of writing, chronicling their thoughts of the sports stars, the careers of the sports stars, the impact of the sports stars and their feelings toward the sports stars. For children of just 11 years old, their work will make you think, make you laugh, and in some instances, touch you deeply. It is an incredibly diverse and talented collection of literature. Of differing length and of differing standard, each piece of writing is, however, linked by one solid bond. Heart. When reading these varied pieces, an unmistakable honesty - only granted to those still young - comes flooding from the pages. No wonder then that the literacy project that delivered such a thought provoking book is being hailed by education professionals as unique and powerful in the extreme.
Make no mistake, this is not a children's book. This is a genuine sports book. And a sports book of some merit. You will learn much about the professional sportspeople featured in this book that you will never have read in previous books or articles written about them. Complimenting the children's work perfectly, is an introductory essay on each sports person by the editor of the book and leader of the project from its inception, David Brayley.
“Believing is achieving” is unique. It is a must read book that will inspire, inform and entertain sports fans everywhere - young or old. There is only one thing left to reveal - who are these Welsh stars that gave of their time to travel to a small village on the western boundary of Swansea and inspire and enthral the children with their honesty and passion? Well here goes - you might well have heard of some of them; Ieuan Evans (Llanelli, Bath, Wales & British Lions), Robert Croft (Glamorgan & England), Enzo Maccarinelli (Swansea's First World Boxing Champion), Ashley Williams (Swansea City & Wales), Clayton Blackmore (Manchester United & Wales) and last but most certainly not least, Nicole Cooke (Welsh, British, World & Olympic Champion).
Their quality and successes are undeniable, and they all have one key fact in common - they all believed and they all achieved.
There can be no stronger message, and told through the eyes of such young and talented people, there can be no stronger vehicle for delivering it. “Believing is achieving” is a truly inspirational book.
